Transition and Growth
In the most abstract terms humans are each an “open system” that interacts with other “open systems”. Individuals develop habits that serve them. Our habits and those of others form patterns within which we all do our best to get our needs met. It all works more or less well until it doesn’t. Then we may feel stressed, overwhelmed, lost, angry, confused, or persistently dissatisfied.
Few of us think of ourselves in the language of non-linear dynamics – say, as a weather system – but many of us know how hard it can be to navigate situational or personal changes.
Sometimes our circumstances change: a new job or career, marriage, parenthood, the empty nest, health challenges that impact our daily living, a move, or blending of families.
Sometimes there is no apparent change in our circumstances but we feel we really need something to be different. Perhaps in the way a snake needs to shed its skin you have outgrown the ways and habits that carried you this far in life. Now you are constrained by them.
In any case you may be bogged down in circular or ruminative thinking; frozen by overwhelming feelings; frustrated and/or angry over lost focus, lost initiative, or loss of concentrate. You may have lost your sense of who you are. Recovery of your balance, strength and purpose is important and possible.
Together we can clarify where you would like to be in relation to yourself and the world around you – your family of origin, the family you’ve built, your work, your communities, your physical, spiritual, and soulful self. And then you can begin to engage the world on your terms.
With each transition you successfully navigate, the next transition becomes easier.
